Of Irish, Scottish, and Italian descent, Bryce was the daughter of Howard and Karen Johnston as well as the sister of brother Matthew. Hunter graduated from Frazier High School in Pittsburgh in 1998. Bryce majored in both non-fiction writing and English Literature at the University of Pittsburgh, which she graduated from with an advanced degree in literature in 2003.
