Biography

Saratchandra Chatterjee, also known as Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, was a Bengali novelist and short story writer of the early 20th century. Most of his works deal with the lifestyle, tragedy, and struggle of the village people and the contemporary socio-cultural practices that prevailed in Bengal. He remains the most popular, translated, and adapted Indian author of all time. His works have been adapted in around fifty films in different South Asian languages. Particularly, his novel 'Devdas' (1917) has been adapted in sixteen different cinematic versions in languages including Bengali, Hindi, and Telugu.
